Programs & Services

DESK serves people who are experiencing homelessness or living in poverty by providing food assistance and services that promote healthcommunity, and equity.  Our programs are generally geared toward individuals and families with children who are experiencing food insecurity.

DESK seeks to maintain a “low barrier of entry to services,” which means that we try to ensure that there are as few obstacles to accessing help as possible.  For our Evening Meals program, anyone is welcome, no questions asked.  For our Food Pantry program, there is some very short and easy paperwork to fill out once per year, and each week clients are asked to sign in.  In the interest of privacy, DESK strictly forbids the use of multimedia recording devices of any kind during our program operations, unless written consent is given.

DESK serves dinner Sunday through Thursday at our main dining room at the Center Church Parish House (311 Temple St. in New Haven).  On Fridays and Saturdays, we partner with the Yale Community Kitchen to serve at the United Church Parish House (323 Temple St.).  In addition to providing nutritious meals, DESK ensures that our dining room is a safe and welcoming space for all.  We foster a sense of community by encouraging our guests and volunteers to hang out, chat, and learn from each other.  DESK partners with other service providers, including Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center, Columbus House, Liberty Community Services, Community Action Agency, HAPPY, and others, to provide other onsite services, all toward the goal of lifting our clients out of poverty and toward stability and equity.  Altogether, DESK’s dinner program serves about 1,700 unduplicated individuals annually.
Each night after dinner, DESK distributes bag lunches to ensure that those who cannot get to the lunch-time soup kitchens (Community Soup Kitchen on Broadway and St. Ann’s in Hamden) have something for the next day.
Every Wednesday, DESK opens its doors at 1:45 pm to offer groceries to those in need.  Community Health Workers from Project Access are always onsite to offer additional services, including patient navigation and connections to mainstream support programs.  The program serves between 60 and 170 households each week, depending on the time of year and time of month.  Altogether, the DESK Food Pantry serves about 1,200 unduplicated households annually.
Each summer, DESK provides weekly groceries beyond downtown as way to support families during the “summer gap” (when 30,000 children in New Haven must go without school-meals).  In recent years, we have worked with Elm City Communities (Housing Authority) and the United Way of Greater New Haven to offer Neighborhood Pantry assistance at Quinnipiac Terrace and outside the Church of St. Francis and St. Rose of Lima on Ferry Street in Fair Haven.  These programs serve over 300 families each summer..
Every Tuesday, DESK provides a hot lunch to low-income seniors at the East Shore Senior Center. To sign up for this program, please contact Michele Clary-Butler at the City of New Haven’s Department of Elderly Services: email or call (203) 640-4710.
DESK participates in two programs on Thanksgiving:

  1.  Thanksgiving for All is a community-wide effort to deliver dinner to over 1,200 people in Greater New Haven on Thanksgiving morning.  If you’d like to sign up, please call our partners at Interfaith Volunteer Care Givers at (203) 230-8994.
  2. Thanksgiving Lunch is served at DESK (311 Temple Street, New Haven) at 12:00 pm on Thanksgiving Day.  No reservations required!
